Diploma programs have been running in New Zealand by institutions, universities and private schools. These programs are equal-event of last year of high school to masters. It is not secret that there is a shortage in quite a few areas in New Zealand such as IT, Hospitality, Healthcare and more.
So majority of these programs are specifically designed to educate and train students to be work ready after graduation. What is more, diploma students who study in certain providers who have been ranked met the certain criteria are able to work part-time during their studies and this helps students to understand the work environment, employment expectations in New Zealand. Considering the fact that most of these students are internationals therefore, this factor can be extremely significant to notice the differences in between their home countries and New Zealand.
As a diploma graduate I can confidently say that there are a lot to learn from quality diploma program. Firstly, the diploma programs are focused on practical education rather than theory. As mentioned above that some students are able to experience work environment before graduating. Also, competition in the sector pushes education providers to provide work support for their students. Some of the providers have career support teams on house. These teams help students with preparing CVs, job interviews, job search and more. Few of the providers go out there to build industry links and partners with potential employers. These employers been invited to student's projects, presentations and even graduations to meet the students and discuss further opportunities.
Furthermore, some of the teachers are either previous/current business owners, entrepreneurs, managers, or having related work experience in the area that they are teaching. This can benefits the students with industry network, learning from the first hand and confidence in teaching.
Diploma programs have different levels and every level offer different opportunities after completion of the program. INZ (Immigration New Zealand) allows students to apply for post-study work visa after completing certain levels. Depending on the level students can apply up to 3 years post-study work visa. Some diploma programs are considered only as preparation to further study such as level 4 which can be equal-event to university foundation program. These informations and more are available at INZ's website and strongly recommended to read them before making a decision ( https://www.immigration.govt.nz ).
Researching the program before enrolling plays an important role in student's success not only academically also in their professional career and employment. Considering more than one options (education providers) also can be useful to make the best decision possible. In order to decide what is the best program available, students must do a deep research about program content, job opportunities, course completion rates and category of the provider. All these important informations are available at NZQA's website ( https://www.nzqa.govt.nz ).
